About the role
Senior Solutions Architect — Application Modernisation within a technology and digital transformation programme focused on modernising a portfolio of legacy line-of-business applications. The work spans assessment, discovery, target architecture, migration planning, and the safe retirement of systems that are being replaced. The legacy landscape includes applications built with Oracle APEX/PL-SQL and mainframe workloads, which are being modernised to cloud-native services implemented in Java/Spring Boot, complemented by an Angular front end and deployed on a managed Kubernetes environment. Mainframe migration and decommissioning is a major local initiative. The role is investigative and architecture-driven: recovering how legacy systems behave under ambiguity, designing a credible path to the modern target, and planning orderly retirement of replaced workloads. AI tooling and internally developed accelerators are used to speed up legacy code comprehension, translation, and behaviour/parity testing, supported by mainframe subject matter experts.
Where the centre of gravity sits
The role is primarily analysis, discovery, and planning across both the application and mainframe estates. The architect leads assessment, owns the target architecture and migration patterns, and drives the decommissioning plan, sequencing, and risk picture. Hands-on architecture and design governance are part of the job; day-to-day build leadership is not the main focus.
Key responsibilities
Assessment & discovery (primary focus)
- Lead discovery of the legacy portfolio through application inventory, mapping of data and integrations, and documentation of business logic that may be embedded in systems without complete documentation.
- Reverse-engineer legacy APEX applications (pages, processes, computations, validations, shared components, and server-side PL/SQL) to recover the real system behaviour.
- Analyse mainframe workloads using an equivalent reverse-engineering approach (programs, batch flows, data sets, and transaction processing), working with mainframe SMEs to recover business rules and data lineage when documentation is limited.
- Assess each workload for complexity, coupling, data sensitivity, and migration risk, and classify it against an appropriate strategy such as retire, rehost, replatform, or refactor/re-architect.
- Produce the assessment artefacts the programme operates on, including application inventories, dependency and data-flow maps, integration catalogues, and effort/complexity estimates.
- Use database assessment and conversion tooling to evaluate Oracle-to-target schema and PL/SQL conversion effort, and surface conversion blockers early.
- Define end-to-end target architecture for migrating workloads to Java/Spring Boot microservices with an Angular front end, deployed to the managed Kubernetes environment.
- Design scalable, resilient, secure cloud-native architectures following a well-architected approach, and select appropriate platform services (for example relational databases, API entry points, messaging/eventing, serverless components, and object storage).
- Develop reusable migration patterns, reference architectures, and blueprints to ensure consistent approaches across multiple migration streams, including incremental cutover using the strangler pattern.
- Define data and logic migration approaches, including schema conversion, relocation of legacy business logic into services, and re-platforming of batch jobs.
- Sequence migration into waves with explicit dependencies, producing a phased roadmap that keeps the business operating during cutover.
- Select the right per-workload decommissioning and migration strategy across the mainframe estate, balancing risk, cost, and retirement timeline.
- Plan safe retirement of decommissioned systems, including data archival and retention strategies, reference-data and history handling, and clear exit criteria for parallel runs.
- Map dependencies within each mainframe application (upstream feeds, downstream consumers, scheduled batch, and shared datasets) to ensure nothing is switched off while dependencies still exist.
- Develop business-case inputs for decommissioning, including retirement of licensing/support-related costs and capacity-release considerations, to support prioritisation.
- Plan how behavioural equivalence between legacy and modernised systems is established and proven, including characterization/golden-master testing, shadow running, and output reconciliation.
- Own a programme-level risk register covering technical risks, hidden dependencies, and data-integrity concerns across migration phases.
- Define cutover and rollback safety strategies so each migration wave can be reversed without business impact.
- Partner with business stakeholders, product owners, and engineering teams to align migration goals with business priorities.
- Communicate complex architectural decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
- Produce and maintain Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), reference documentation, and roadmaps.
- Work with security, DevOps, and data teams to support compliance, governance, and operational readiness.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to delivery teams during implementation.
- Define standards for the target service stack, CI/CD practices, testing strategy, and use of
