About the role
Data Engineer (Sanctions Tech Innovation) in a regulated, production-critical environment. The assignment involves DevOps and data engineering activities within a team that builds and maintains data-driven solutions supporting sanctions controls using advanced analytics and AI. You design, build, and deploy production-grade data and (AI) solutions, covering data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and deployment while ensuring solutions are secure, compliant, robust, and future-proof.
You collaborate closely with specialists in sanctions, risk ownership, and alert investigation, as well as with data scientists and IT engineers, translating requirements into production-ready components. The work includes identifying and resolving issues related to data quality, performance, and architecture, and contributing structural improvements that benefit the wider team. You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and share knowledge to support continuous improvement.
Key activities
Focus areas include improving automated handling of detection alerts, providing AI-generated insights to support investigators for more complex alerts, building monitoring capabilities to identify potential circumvention behavior through transaction and client patterns, and supporting migration of sanctions control capabilities to a new platform for future-proof trade finance screening.
The assignment is hybrid and based in Utrecht for the duration of approximately 6 months, with start to be discussed.

- 5+ years of experience in DevOps, MLOps or Data Engineering
- Experience deploying statistical models into production, adhering to strict policies and governance frameworks
- Experience with a major cloud platform and CI/CD practices, including designing and maintaining pipelines for automated testing, deployment, and integration
- Strong proficiency in Python and PySpark, complemented by experience with workflow orchestration and model management tools
- All submitted candidates must be in possession of a valid Passport or ID card, which must be taken along to the interview and at the start of the assignment
Wensen
- Experience with sanctions, financial economic crime and regulatory environments is highly appreciated
- Clear motivation to learn and engage with the domain if no direct sanctions experience
- Intrinsic interest in working on financial crime and sanctions topics, as well as a clear motivation to develop domain expertise alongside technical skills
